Every Lobo is familiar with the view of the Sandias from campus, and some may have even driven up to the crest. But, the best way to marvel at our local mountain range is to take a trip on the Sandia Peak Tramway. Climbing over a mile up the steep western face, the Sandia Peak Tram is the longest aerial tram in the United States and boasts some of the best views of any tram in the world. The ride runs about 15 minutes over three towers, while the car you ride in offers views looking down into the deep ravines hundreds of feet below. In the summer, the tram is the best way to see the Sandias, especially getting to the top to witness the NM sunset. In the winter, it doubles as a ski lift, taking passengers to the crest where they can ski or ride down the east side of the mountains to the Sandia Peak Ski Area. All in all, another incredible adventure right in UNM’s backyard.
