Climbing Box Canyon
Thursday, April 26th, 2018 at 5:27 pm

In the desert of Socorro, a climber’s paradise awaits against the rhyolite cliffs and boulders. Ideal for winter climbing and days of milder temperatures, the Box Recreation Area offers a wide variety of outdoor climbing and bouldering options. Difficulties on the wall range from 5.8 to 5.13b, challenging climbers of all skill sets. From anywhere on the wall, striking views are a constant reward. With most of the moderate routes already bolted, this is an ideal destination for any group bringing folks climbing outside the gym for their first time. Off the wall, the bouldering is what many climbers flock here for, with the Alf Rig as the standout challenge. Camping is also permitted for those looking to spend multiple days challenging themselves with the Box Area’s many features. With so many options and routes, The Box is one of New Mexico’s main celebrated outdoor climbing areas.
