The Sandia Foothills

Just east of campus off Tramway Blvd., the Sandias begin their climb a mile into the sky. Named the Spanish word for watermelon for their shape and pink coloration at sunset, the Sandias both are an iconic part of the Albuquerque skyline and an adventure playground. At their base, the foothills offer amazing hikes through the dramatic terrain of desert brush, boulder fields and valleys carved by streams of snowmelt. Look one way, and you’ll find an up-close view of the spectacular Sandias—look the other way, and you’ll see a panoramic view of the city we call home and the landscape far beyond. The foothills are a terrific place for short sunset hikes, full day hikes, trail running, cycling and even bouldering if you can find the right rockpile.
