Hanging of the Greens

Every year, at the beginning of December, groups on campus come together to put on one of the oldest student traditions at The University of New Mexico, Hanging of the Greens. 13,000 farolitos or luminarias are set up around campus in one of the largest public displays in the state of New Mexico. Each decorated area of campus is set up by different student groups and organizations that prepare throughout the week for the event by folding paper bags and filling each one with sand and a candle.
Come nightfall, the Hanging of the Greens festivities begin as the candles in the paper bags are lit. The event brings hundreds of students and members of the Lobo community together, beginning outside the UNM Bookstore and the UNM Student Union Building. From there, groups of people can carol across campus, past the Duck Pond to the University House, where Mortar Board students bestow the President of the University with a wreath to hang on the entrance gate – hence “Hanging of the Greens.” Evening strolls conclude with a casual reception at Hodgin Hall, where the caroling continues and all attending can enjoy hot chocolate, biscochito cookies, posole and many other favorite dishes. It’s a fan favorite festive way for Lobos to start the holidays.
