Sipapu Pond Skimming
Wednesday, April 4th, 2018 at 4:58 pm

Spring in Northern New Mexico means the snow starts to melt, the winter jackets can come off, and little puddles begin to form on the slopes – so, naturally, skiers and snowboarders invented a competition around it. Pond skimming is just that: start at the top of the slope, get up as much speed as possible, and see who can make it the furthest across the pond at the bottom of the mountain. Some seasoned pros make it look like an effortless glide across the ponds surface, but most crash, flip, and fall. Being that the worst possible outcome is getting your clothes wet, the annual event at Sipapu Ski and Summer Resort draws the whole community together to laugh, as skiers and snowboards inevitably get soaked in spectacular fashion. It’s a fun way to spend a day on the mountain, saying goodbye to the ski season and hello to spring.
