Every year, ASUNM Student Special Events hosts Fiestas – one of the largest music festivals in New Mexico and one of the most popular events at UNM. 10 acts took to two stages on Johnson Field as thousands of Lobos came to dance and sing along.
Some local bands helped kick things off this year with Z-Man Thompson, a fifteen-year-old Albuquerque rapper with bars beyond his years opening the show. As the afternoon went on, Vista Kicks and Naked Giants rocked the two stages. Following them, Dam-Funk did exactly what his name suggests – bringing the funk to the good folks of Albuquerque.
With a line of people stretching from the entrance gate to the parking lot, 23-year-old rapper Skizzy Mars took main stage. An artist common to the playlists of most Lobos considering the volume of the crowd’s singalongs, Mars brought down the house with a few of his hits (all while reppin’ a Lobo Life hat, we might add). The final act of the night was Gramatik, and if people weren’t dancing before, he quickly changed that. In front of a sea of thousands of Lobos, Gramatik put on a set full of funk-infused beats and hypnotizing lights.
Come the last song of the night, congratulations and thanks were being given to all the students who volunteered to make the event happen while veteran Lobos debated whether or not this had been the best Fiestas yet as they made for the exit. Whatever the verdict, this year’s Fiestas was simply incredible.
